About Us

SmartImplantSystems, Inc. is a Delaware C-Corp that was founded in 2016. It is based in Maple Grove, Minnesota. Founded by Dr. Nazmi Peyman and Dr. Omid Souresrafil, the company’s primary mission is the development of advanced pain management technology to alleviate chronic spinal cord pain.

Management Team

Dr. Nazmi Peyman

Dr. Nazmi Peyman is the Chief Medical Officer, inventor and founder of SmartImplantSystems. He founded his private practice, Richmond Spine Interventions and Pain Center, in 2001. Dr. Peyman completed his medical training in pain management at the Albert Einstein College of medicine in New York in 1997. He has been providing patient care in Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding areas for over 15 years by providing a variety of spinal interventions. He has been performing injections, Radiofrequency Ablations, and Spinal Cord Stimulator trials to help patients live more comfortable and pain-free lives. He developed and patented the technology with the help of engineers and spinal surgeons.

Dr. Omid Souresrafil

Dr. Omid Souresrafil is the co-founder and CEO of SmartImplantSystems. He is a physician and engineer involved in the development of implantable active medical devices for over 25 years. He has been a part of the founding team of many medical device startups and has recently founded 4 medical device companies some of which were sold to larger companies, each specializing in developing first-in-man medical devices. He was the founder of Apnecardia, EmboMedics, GelTherapies.

Dr. Kayvan Najarian

Dr. Kayvan Najarian is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan. He focuses on the design of signal and image processing; as well as, machine learning methods to create computer-assisted, clinical decision-support systems that improve patient care and reduce the costs of healthcare. Dr. Najarian’s lab also designs sensors to collect and analyze physiological signals and images.

Dr. Harry Puryear

Dr. Harry Puryear is the RF product development leader at SmartImplantSystems. Harry earned a doctorate in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. He has worked in the medical device community for 37 years as an engineer, scientist, and executive. Since 2000 Harry has led R&D departments, concentrating on RF ablation of tissue for cardiac Electrophysiology (arrhythmias), spinal nerves (pain management), and oncology (solid tumor ablation). Harry is an inventor of 25 patents for medical devices and several patents pending. Harry also has extensive experience working with physicians and in conducting clinical research studies.


Susan Alpert, Ph.D., M.D. - Director or Regulatory Affairs 

Susan Alpert, Ph.D., currently the principle of SFA Consulting, LLC, a one person firm focused on the strategies needed to place medical devices into the global market. Dr. Alpert joined Medtronic in July 2003 as Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Compliance. She was Senior Vice President, Global Regulatory Affairs at her retirement in May, 2011 and in this role was responsible for all Medtronic global regulatory policy efforts. Prior to joining Medtronic, Susan served C.R. Bard, Inc., as Vice President of Regulatory Sciences. She also previously worked at the FDA where she held a variety of positions in the Centers dealing with drugs, devices and radiological health, and foods, including six years as the Director of the Office of Device Evaluation. She is a microbiologist and pediatrician with a specialty in infectious diseases and has practical experience in laboratory research and clinical trials.


Greg Molnar PhD - CSO:

Dr. Molnar brings to SmartImplantSystem 20 years of experience as a medical device innovator and expertise in neuromodulation research and therapies. Greg provides leadership to the clinical and preclinical research across the UMN Deep Brain Stimulation Research program. He works with his team to grow the visibility and impact of their discoveries and therapy innovations in this space. Dr. Molnar trained as a clinical neuroscientist at the University of Toronto, where his research focused on the mechanism of action of deep brain stimulation. Greg has always been passionate about innovations that simplify, and foster patient access, and started his medical device career with a small consulting business in Canada while finishing his studies.
Dr. Molnar holds several patents and publications in the neurostimulation space and leverages his leadership by chairing and serving on various industry, academic and government committees to help advance the field.

Dr. Mehul Desai MD

Dr. Mehul Desai is board certified in Pain Medicine and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Dr. Desai is the Founder and President of the International Spine, Pain & Performance Center. Dr. Desai maintains an avid interest in research, serving as the principle investigator on multiple ongoing clinical trials including studies on radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation. He serves as a member of the steering committee of the largest clinical trial investigating the efficacy of spinal cord stimulation in chronic low back pain following spine surgery.

Dr. Ramin Rak MD

Board-certified surgeon Ramin Rak, M.D., F.A.A.N.S., F.A.C.S, is an expert with vast experience in micro-neurosurgical techniques. He specializes in complex spine treatments, tumors, skull-based surgeries, and awake craniotomies. Dr. Rak began his medical studies in Belgium, by earning an undergraduate degree in Medical Basic Sciences, and then his medical degree from the Free University of Brussels. He then gained hands-on training in Washington, DC, completing an externship and then an internship in the Washington Hospital Center’s Department of Surgery. Next, he served as a clinical Neurosurgery Fellow in Bethesda, Maryland, then a Neurosurgery Resident at George Washington University’s Department of Neurosurgery. Following these stints, Dr. Ramin Rak became a Skull-Based Micro-Neurosurgery Fellow at North Shore-LIJ, then a Chief Neurosurgery Resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. He specializes in complex spine treatments, tumors, skull-based surgeries, and awake craniotomies.

Dr. Michael Park

Dr. Park is an associate professor at the University of MN,  and a neurosurgeon. He has extensive experience with neuromodulation, also deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia. He also has extensive neuromodulation experience to stimulate the spinal cord and to deliver intrathecal drug therapy to treat cancer and chronic pain. Along with other advisors he will be pivotal in the design and development of our devices.

Dr. Park received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Kansas (KU) in Kansas City, KS, and received a Bachelors in Biology from KU in Lawrence, KS, and dual Bachelors in Electrical Engineering and Economics from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. He was a 2009 recipient of the William P. Van Wagenen Fellowship and studied at the Assistance Publique L’Hopital d’Adulte de la Timone, Marseille, France.

Along with other surgeons and pain specialists Dr. Park will be helping SmartImplantSystems to develop its active implantable surgical devices.

Dr. Hamid Hassanzadeh

Dr. Hassanzadeh is an assistant Professor of Spine Surgery at the Department of Surgery, University of Virginia School of Medicine . He joined the Spine Surgery Division of the University of Virginia Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2014. After completing his Orthopedic Surgery residency training at Johns Hopkins University, he underwent fellowship training in Spine Surgery at Rush University Medical Center and fellowship training in Pediatric Spine Surgery at Shriner Hospital in Chicago. His clinical interests and expertise include complex spinal deformity and minimal invasive spine surgery.

Along with his clinical interests, he is actively involved with research encompassing functional outcome in adult deformity, minimally invasive and motion preservations spine surgery and spine biomechanics. He has published numerous peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has been invited to speak nationally and internationally. He was awarded the prestigious HIBBS Award for his research at the Scoliosis Research Society.
